## ANTI-PATTERNS
- **NEVER** store WireGuard keys in plaintext on flash (always encrypted via NVS)
- **NEVER** use `printf` for sensitive data (keys, tokens)
- **NEVER** hardcode WiFi credentials (use menuconfig or provisioning)
- **NEVER** block main task for > 100ms (use timers or tasks)
- **NEVER** use `malloc()` in interrupt context
## COMMANDS
```bash
# Build
idf.py set-target esp32
idf.py build
# Flash & Monitor
idf.py -p /dev/ttyUSB0 flash monitor
# Clean
idf.py fullclean
# Menuconfig
idf.py menuconfig
```
## DEPENDENCIES
- **ESP-IDF**: v5.2+ (framework)
- **mbedtls**: AES-256-GCM, SHA-256 (built-in)
- **lwIP**: TCP/IP stack (built-in)
- **FreeRTOS**: RTOS (built-in)
- **wireguard-esp32**: WireGuard tunnel library (component)
## NOTES
- ESP32 uses FreeRTOS, NOT Zephyr RTOS
- lwIP is the network stack, NOT kernel networking
- WireGuard runs in userspace via lwIP socket API
- Config is stored in NVS (flash), not filesystem
- No gRPC support (too heavy for ESP32) — HTTP only
- No port forwarding (userspace agent only)
- Agent version: 1.0.0 (initial release)

# NexusGuard Embedded Agent
ESP32-based WireGuard agent for IoT/edge devices. Connects to NexusGuard Server Core via HTTP provisioning + heartbeat, manages WireGuard tunnel via lwIP stack.
## Overview
This agent runs on ESP32 (LW840X and compatible) with FreeRTOS + ESP-IDF. It provides:
- **Zero-Trust VPN Tunnel**: WireGuard over lwIP
- **Auto-Provisioning**: HTTP-based key exchange with server
- **Heartbeat Monitoring**: Periodic status reports + config sync
- **NVS Config Persistence**: WireGuard keys stored in flash (never disk)
- **Independent Build**: No dependency on main NexusGuard repo
## Hardware Requirements
| Component | Specification |
|-----------|---------------|
| MCU | ESP32 (Xtensa LX7) or ESP32-S3 |
| RAM | ≥ 320KB SRAM |
| Flash | ≥ 4MB |
| WiFi | 802.11 b/g/n |
| antenna | U.FL or PCB trace |
## Quick Start
### 1. Install ESP-IDF
```bash
# Follow official guide: https://docs.espressif.com/projects/esp-idf/en/latest/esp32/get-started/
# ESP-IDF v5.2+ required
```
### 2. Configure Server
```bash
# Set server URL, registration token, and WiFi credentials
idf.py menuconfig
# Navigate to: Component config → NexusGuard Agent
```
Or edit `sdkconfig.defaults` directly:
```
CONFIG_NEXUS_SERVER_URL="https://api-nexus.datadunia.com"
CONFIG_NEXUS_REG_TOKEN="your-registration-token"
CONFIG_NEXUS_SERVER_SALT="your-server-salt"
CONFIG_NEXUS_WIFI_SSID="your-wifi-ssid"
CONFIG_NEXUS_WIFI_PASSWORD="your-wifi-password"
```
### 3. Build & Flash
```bash
idf.py set-target esp32
idf.py build
idf.py -p /dev/ttyUSB0 flash monitor
```
## Server Configuration
The agent requires the following server configuration:
| Parameter | Description | Where to Find |
|-----------|-------------|---------------|
| Server URL | API endpoint | `https://api-nexus.datadunia.com` |
| Registration Token | Single-use provisioning token | Server admin dashboard |
| Server Salt | AES-256-GCM key derivation | Server `.env` file (`SERVER_SALT`) |
### Provisioning Flow
1. Create device in server dashboard
2. Copy registration token
3. Configure agent with token (menuconfig or NVS)
4. Agent boots → connects WiFi → provisions → builds tunnel
### Heartbeat
Agent sends heartbeat every 30 seconds:
```json
POST /api/v1/heartbeat
{
"device_id": "uuid",
"status": "connected",
"tunnel_up": true,
"last_handshake": "2026-06-26T09:00:00Z"
}
```
Server responds with config sync (detects changes, triggers rebuild).

## 3. Crypto Protocol
### Key Derivation
```
key = SHA256(hwid + salt)
```
- `hwid`: Hardware ID (ESP32 MAC or serial)
- `salt`: Server's `SERVER_SALT` environment variable
- Output: 32-byte AES key
### Encryption (Server Side)
```
plaintext = ConfigPayload JSON
nonce = random 12 bytes
ciphertext = AES-256-GCM-Encrypt(key, nonce, plaintext)
encrypted_config = nonce + ciphertext
```
### Decryption (Agent Side)
```
encrypted_config = response.encrypted_config (base64 decoded)
nonce = encrypted_config[0:12]
ciphertext = encrypted_config[12:]
plaintext = AES-256-GCM-Decrypt(key, nonce, ciphertext)
ConfigPayload = JSON.parse(plaintext)
```
### Implementation Notes
- Use `mbedtls_sha256()` for key derivation
- Use `mbedtls_gcm_*()` for AES-256-GCM
- Nonce size: 12 bytes (fixed for GCM)
- Tag size: 16 bytes (default for GCM)
## 4. Config Change Detection
### Heartbeat Hash Comparison
The server returns `forwards_hash` in heartbeat response. Agent should:
1. Store last received `forwards_hash` in NVS
2. Compare with current hash
3. If different, trigger config reload
```c
// Pseudo-code
char last_hash[64];
nvs_get_str(nvs_handle, "config_hash", last_hash, sizeof(last_hash));
if (strcmp(last_hash, response.forwards_hash) != 0) {
// Config changed, rebuild tunnel
tunnel_rebuild(&config);
nvs_set_str(nvs_handle, "config_hash", response.forwards_hash);
}
```
## 5. Versioning
### Current Version
- API Version: v1 (implicit, no version in URL)
- Agent Version: 1.0.0
### Compatibility Policy
- **Breaking Changes**: Major version bump (v2)
- **New Fields**: Added without version bump (agent ignores unknown fields)
- **Deprecation**: 6-month notice before removal
### Agent Behavior
- Agent ignores unknown fields in server response
- Agent sends only required fields in request
- Agent handles missing optional fields gracefully
## 6. Examples
### Provisioning Flow
```c
// 1. Get hardware ID
char hwid[32];
get_hardware_id(hwid, sizeof(hwid));
// 2. Send provisioning request
char *response = http_post(server_url, "/api/v1/provision",
"{\"token\":\"%s\",\"hwid\":\"%s\"}", token, hwid);
// 3. Parse encrypted config
cJSON *json = cJSON_Parse(response);
char *encrypted = cJSON_GetObjectItem(json, "encrypted_config")->valuestring;
// 4. Decrypt config
wg_config_t config;
decrypt_config(encrypted, strlen(encrypted), hwid, salt, &config);
// 5. Store in NVS
config_save(&config);
// 6. Apply to WireGuard
tunnel_init(&config);
```
### Heartbeat Flow
```c
// 1. Get tunnel status
bool tunnel_up = tunnel_is_up();
int64_t last_hs = tunnel_get_last_handshake();
// 2. Send heartbeat
char *response = http_post(server_url, "/api/v1/heartbeat",
"{\"device_id\":\"%s\",\"tunnel_up\":%s,\"last_handshake\":\"%s\"}",
config.device_id, tunnel_up ? "true" : "false",
format_timestamp(last_hs));
// 3. Check for config changes
cJSON *json = cJSON_Parse(response);
const char *new_hash = cJSON_GetObjectItem(json, "forwards_hash")->valuestring;
if (strcmp(config.config_hash, new_hash) != 0) {
// Config changed, reload
load_config_from_response(json, &config);
tunnel_rebuild(&config);
config_save(&config);
}
```
## 7. Error Handling
### HTTP Retries
```c
#define MAX_RETRIES 3
#define RETRY_DELAY_MS 1000
for (int i = 0; i < MAX_RETRIES; i++) {
esp_err_t err = http_post(...);
if (err == ESP_OK) break;
vTaskDelay(RETRY_DELAY_MS * (i + 1) / portTICK_PERIOD_MS);
}
```
### Timeout Settings
- Connect timeout: 10 seconds
- Read timeout: 30 seconds
- Write timeout: 10 seconds
## 8. Security Notes
- All communication over HTTPS (TLS 1.2+)
- Registration token is single-use (consumed on first provisioning)
- Device can re-provision by obtaining new token
- Keys never logged or transmitted in plaintext

## 4. Server Discovery & Provisioning
### 4.1 Overview
The embedded agent connects to NexusGuard Server Core via HTTP. The agent must be configured with:
- **Server URL**: The API endpoint (e.g., `https://api-nexus.datadunia.com`)
- **Registration Token**: Single-use token for initial provisioning
- **Server Salt**: For AES-256-GCM key derivation (shared secret)

### 4.3 Server Configuration Sources
The embedded agent can obtain server configuration from:
| Source | Priority | Use Case |
|--------|----------|----------|
| NVS (saved config) | 1 | After initial provisioning |
| sdkconfig (menuconfig) | 2 | Build-time configuration |
| SmartConfig / BLE | 3 | WiFi provisioning (future) |
| QR Code | 4 | Manual provisioning (future) |
### 4.4 Build-Time Configuration
Configure server URL and token via `idf.py menuconfig`:
```
Component config → NexusGuard Agent
├── Server URL (NEXUS_SERVER_URL)
├── Registration Token (NEXUS_REG_TOKEN)
├── Server Salt (NEXUS_SERVER_SALT)
└── WiFi SSID (NEXUS_WIFI_SSID)
└── WiFi Password (NEXUS_WIFI_PASSWORD)
```
### 4.5 Runtime Configuration (NVS)
After first provisioning, config is stored in NVS:
| Key | Description |
|-----|-------------|

### 4.6 Server API Contract
The embedded agent uses the **same HTTP API** as the Go device-agent:
| Endpoint | Method | Description |
|----------|--------|-------------|
| `/api/v1/provision` | POST | Initial key exchange |
| `/api/v1/heartbeat` | POST | Periodic status + config sync |
**Key**: The API contract is stable and documented in `docs/API_COMPAT.md`. The server does not need to know whether the client is Go agent or ESP32 agent — it treats them identically.
### 4.7 Independence from Main Repo
The embedded agent is **fully independent**:
```
nexus-agent-embedded/ # Standalone repo
├── main/ # C source code
├── components/ # ESP-IDF components
├── docs/ # Documentation
├── CMakeLists.txt # Build system
└── sdkconfig.defaults # Configuration
```
**No dependency on**:
- `server-core` (Go backend)
- `device-agent` (Go agent)
- `dashboard-ui` (Vue frontend)
**Build anywhere** with ESP-IDF toolchain — no Go, no Node.js, no Docker.

// Enable WiFi sleep when tunnel is up
esp_wifi_set_ps(WIFI_PS_MIN_MODEM);
// Disable sleep during provisioning/heartbeat
esp_wifi_set_ps(WIFI_PS_NONE);
```
### 7.2 Light Sleep
```c
// Enter light sleep between heartbeats (30s)
esp_light_sleep_start();
// Wake on: WiFi event, GPIO interrupt, timer
```
## 8. Security Considerations
### 8.1 Key Storage
- Server communication over HTTPS (TLS 1.2+)
- Skip certificate verification for internal network (configurable)
- Future: Support custom CA certificate
### 8.3 Hardware ID
- Derived from ESP32 eFuse MAC or custom serial
- Used for key derivation (HWID + salt)
- Never transmitted in plaintext
## 9. Testing Strategy
### 9.1 Unit Tests
- Crypto: Decrypt known ciphertext with known key
- Config: NVS read/write cycle
- Heartbeat: Parse server response
### 9.2 Integration Tests
- Provision → Tunnel → Heartbeat cycle
- Config change detection
- Tunnel rebuild on config change
### 9.3 Hardware Tests
- ESP32-S3 DevKit flashing
- WiFi connection stability
- WireGuard handshake verification
- Power consumption measurement
## 10. Future Enhancements
### 10.1 Phase 2
- OTA firmware updates
- Custom CA certificate support
- Power optimization (deep sleep)
- Multiple server support
### 10.2 Phase 3
- Zephyr RTOS port
- ESP32-S2 support
- Ethernet (SPI) support
- Bluetooth provisioning
# Namespace + VRF Summary
> Enterprise Network Isolation for NexusGuard SD-WAN — Reference Architecture
## Executive Summary
This document provides a high-level summary of the Namespace + VRF architecture for enterprise-grade network isolation in NexusGuard.
## Key Concepts
### 1. Network Namespace
**What:** Complete network stack isolation at kernel level
**Benefits:**
- Isolated network interfaces
- Isolated routing tables
- Isolated nftables rules
- Isolated socket bindings
**Use Case:** Multi-tenant SD-WAN, compliance isolation
### 2. VRF (Virtual Routing and Forwarding)
**What:** Routing table isolation within a namespace
**Benefits:**
- Multiple routing tables per namespace
- Same IP across different VRFs
- Policy routing support
**Use Case:** Development/testing isolation, network segmentation
### 3. Multi-User API Access
**What:** Role-based access control per namespace
**Benefits:**
- Multiple users per namespace
- Different permission levels (admin, operator, viewer)
- Audit trail per user
**Use Case:** Enterprise deployments, team collaboration
# Namespace + VRF Architecture
> Enterprise Network Isolation for NexusGuard SD-WAN
## Overview
This document describes the **Namespace + VRF** architecture for enterprise-grade network isolation. This is a **reference architecture** for future development — not currently implemented.
## Problem Statement
Current architecture has limitations:
1. **Single routing domain** — All users share same kernel routing table
2. **IP conflicts** — Same IP on different WgServers causes routing issues
3. **No user isolation** — Users can see each other's traffic
4. **API access control** — Limited multi-user support per namespace
## Solution: Network Namespace + VRF
### Layer 1: Network Namespace (Kernel Isolation)
Network namespace provides **complete network stack isolation**:
```
┌─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐
│ Linux Kernel │
│ │
│ ┌──────────────────────────────────────────────────┐ │
│ │ Default Namespace (root) │ │
│ │ ├── eth0 (mgmt interface) │ │
│ │ ├── wg0 (server WireGuard) │ │
│ │ └── nftables (global rules) │ │
│ └──────────────────────────────────────────────────┘ │
│ │
│ ┌──────────────────────────────────────────────────┐ │
│ │ Namespace: ns_zerocode │ │
│ │ ├── lo (loopback) │ │
│ │ ├── veth0 (virtual ethernet) │ │
│ │ ├── WireGuard interfaces │ │
│ │ └── nftables (isolated rules) │ │
│ └──────────────────────────────────────────────────┘ │
│ │
│ ┌──────────────────────────────────────────────────┐ │
│ │ Namespace: ns_alice │ │
│ │ ├── lo (loopback) │ │
│ │ ├── veth0 (virtual ethernet) │ │
│ │ ├── WireGuard interfaces │ │
│ │ └── nftables (isolated rules) │ │
│ └──────────────────────────────────────────────────┘ │
└─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
```
**What's isolated per namespace:**
- Network interfaces
- Routing tables
- iptables/nftables rules
- `/proc/net` entries
- Socket bindings
### Layer 2: VRF (Routing Isolation within Namespace)
VRF provides **routing table isolation** within a namespace:
```
┌─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐
│ Namespace: ns_zerocode │
│ │
│ ┌──────────────────────────────────────────────────┐ │
│ │ VRF: vrf_main (table 100) │ │
│ │ ├── wg-z-main (10.100.0.1/24) │ │
│ │ │ ├── Device A: 10.100.0.2 │ │
│ │ │ └── Device B: 10.100.0.3 │ │
│ │ └── Routing table 100 │ │
│ └──────────────────────────────────────────────────┘ │
│ │
│ ┌──────────────────────────────────────────────────┐ │
│ │ VRF: vrf_isolated (table 200) │ │
│ │ ├── wg-z-iso (10.200.0.1/24) │ │
│ │ │ └── Device C: 10.200.0.2 │ │
│ │ └── Routing table 200 │ │
│ └──────────────────────────────────────────────────┘ │
└─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
```
**What's isolated per VRF:**
- Routing tables
- Gateway routes
- Policy routing
### Layer 3: API Access Control (Multi-User)
Multi-control user access per namespace:
```
┌─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐
│ Namespace: ns_zerocode │
│ │
│ Users: │
│ ├── zerocode (admin) → Full API access │
│ ├── bob (operator) → Limited API access │
│ └── charlie (viewer) → Read-only API access │
│ │
│ API Endpoints: │
│ ├── POST /api/v1/ns/zerocode/devices [admin] │
│ ├── GET /api/v1/ns/zerocode/devices [all] │
│ ├── PUT /api/v1/ns/zerocode/devices/:id [admin] │
│ ├── DELETE /api/v1/ns/zerocode/devices/:id [admin] │
│ └── GET /api/v1/ns/zerocode/status [all] │
└─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
```
## Data Model
## Migration Strategy
### Backward Compatibility
1. **Legacy mode** — Keep current architecture as default
2. **Opt-in** — Users can opt-in to namespace + VRF
3. **Migration tool** — Script to migrate existing users to namespaces
### Migration Steps
1. Create namespace for each existing user
2. Move devices to user's namespace
3. Create VRF in namespace
4. Move WireGuard interfaces to VRF
5. Update API routes
6. Test and validate
### Rollback Plan
1. Keep legacy mode available
2. Migration tool can reverse changes
3. No data loss during migration
## Decision Matrix
### Choose Current Architecture If:
- [ ] Single tenant deployment
- [ ] Simple network requirements
- [ ] Limited resources
- [ ] Quick time-to-market
- [ ] Low complexity tolerance
### Choose Namespace + VRF If:
- [ ] Multi-tenant deployment
- [ ] Strong isolation requirements
- [ ] Compliance needs (PCI DSS, HIPAA)
- [ ] Same IP across tenants
- [ ] Role-based API access
## Recommendation
### For Small Deployments (< 10 users)
**Recommendation:** Current architecture
**Reasons:**
- Simpler to implement and maintain
- Lower resource overhead
- Faster time-to-market
- Easier debugging
### For Enterprise Deployments (> 10 users)
**Recommendation:** Namespace + VRF
**Reasons:**
- Stronger isolation
- Better security
- Compliance ready
- Scalable
### For Multi-Tenant Deployments
**Recommendation:** Namespace + VRF (required)
**Reasons:**
- Complete tenant isolation
- No IP conflicts
- Role-based access control
- Audit trail
## Conclusion
The Namespace + VRF architecture provides **superior isolation and security** at the cost of **increased complexity and resource usage**. It's the right choice for enterprise and multi-tenant deployments, but overkill for simple single-tenant setups.
**Key takeaway:** Choose the architecture that matches your deployment requirements. Don't over-engineer for simplicity, but don't under-engineer for security.
This document provides a step-by-step implementation guide for the Namespace + VRF architecture in NexusGuard.
## Prerequisites
### System Requirements
```bash
# Check kernel version (need 4.3+ for VRF)
uname -r
# Check VRF support

"time"
"github.com/google/uuid"
"gorm.io/gorm"
)
type Namespace struct {
ID uuid.UUID `json:"id" gorm:"type:uuid;primaryKey"`
Name string `json:"name" gorm:"uniqueIndex;not null;size:64"`
OwnerID uuid.UUID `json:"owner_id" gorm:"type:uuid;not null;index"`
Owner User `json:"owner" gorm:"foreignKey:OwnerID"`
Users []NamespaceUser `json:"users" gorm:"foreignKey:NamespaceID"`
VRFs []VRF `json:"vrfs" gorm:"foreignKey:NamespaceID"`
CreatedAt time.Time `json:"created_at"`
UpdatedAt time.Time `json:"updated_at"`
}
func (n *Namespace) BeforeCreate(tx *gorm.DB) (err error) {
if n.ID == uuid.Nil {
n.ID = uuid.New()
}
return
}
type NamespaceUser struct {
ID uuid.UUID `json:"id" gorm:"type:uuid;primaryKey"`
NamespaceID uuid.UUID `json:"namespace_id" gorm:"type:uuid;not null;index"`
Namespace Namespace `json:"namespace" gorm:"foreignKey:NamespaceID"`
UserID uuid.UUID `json:"user_id" gorm:"type:uuid;not null;index"`
User User `json:"user" gorm:"foreignKey:UserID"`
Role string `json:"role" gorm:"not null;size:16;default:'viewer'"` // admin, operator, viewer
CreatedAt time.Time `json:"created_at"`
UpdatedAt time.Time `json:"updated_at"`
}
func (n *NamespaceUser) BeforeCreate(tx *gorm.DB) (err error) {
if n.ID == uuid.Nil {
n.ID = uuid.New()
}
return
}
type VRF struct {
ID uuid.UUID `json:"id" gorm:"type:uuid;primaryKey"`
NamespaceID uuid.UUID `json:"namespace_id" gorm:"type:uuid;not null;index"`
Namespace Namespace `json:"namespace" gorm:"foreignKey:NamespaceID"`
Name string `json:"name" gorm:"not null;size:64"`
TableID int `json:"table_id" gorm:"not null"`
CreatedAt time.Time `json:"created_at"`
UpdatedAt time.Time `json:"updated_at"`
}
func (v *VRF) BeforeCreate(tx *gorm.DB) (err error) {
if v.ID == uuid.Nil {
v.ID = uuid.New()
}
return
}
```
### Step 1.3: Update WgServer Model
```go
// internal/models/models.go
type WgServer struct {
// ... existing fields
// VRF fields
NamespaceID *uuid.UUID `json:"namespace_id" gorm:"type:uuid;index"`
Namespace *Namespace `json:"namespace" gorm:"foreignKey:NamespaceID"`
VRFID *uuid.UUID `json:"vrf_id" gorm:"type:uuid;index"`
VRF *VRF `json:"vrf" gorm:"foreignKey:VRFID"`
}
```
### Step 1.4: Create Migration
```go
// internal/models/migration_vrf.go
package models
import "gorm.io/gorm"
func MigrateVRF(db *gorm.DB) error {
// Create namespaces table
if err := db.Exec(`
CREATE TABLE IF NOT EXISTS namespaces (
id UUID PRIMARY KEY,
name VARCHAR(64) UNIQUE NOT NULL,
owner_id UUID NOT NULL REFERENCES users(id),
created_at TIMESTAMP DEFAULT NOW(),
updated_at TIMESTAMP DEFAULT NOW()
)
`).Error; err != nil {
return err
}
// Create namespace_users table
if err := db.Exec(`
CREATE TABLE IF NOT EXISTS namespace_users (
id UUID PRIMARY KEY,
namespace_id UUID NOT NULL REFERENCES namespaces(id) ON DELETE CASCADE,
user_id UUID NOT NULL REFERENCES users(id) ON DELETE CASCADE,
role VARCHAR(16) NOT NULL DEFAULT 'viewer',
created_at TIMESTAMP DEFAULT NOW(),
updated_at TIMESTAMP DEFAULT NOW(),
UNIQUE(namespace_id, user_id)
)
`).Error; err != nil {
return err
}
// Create vrfs table
if err := db.Exec(`
CREATE TABLE IF NOT EXISTS vrfs (
id UUID PRIMARY KEY,
namespace_id UUID NOT NULL REFERENCES namespaces(id) ON DELETE CASCADE,
name VARCHAR(64) NOT NULL,
table_id INTEGER NOT NULL,
created_at TIMESTAMP DEFAULT NOW(),
updated_at TIMESTAMP DEFAULT NOW(),
UNIQUE(namespace_id, name)
)
`).Error; err != nil {
return err
}
// Add VRF fields to wg_servers
if err := db.Exec(`
ALTER TABLE wg_servers
ADD COLUMN IF NOT EXISTS namespace_id UUID REFERENCES namespaces(id),
ADD COLUMN IF NOT EXISTS vrf_id UUID REFERENCES vrfs(id)
`).Error; err != nil {
return err
}
return nil
}
```
### Step 1.5: Run Migration
```bash
cd apps/server-core
go run -tags dev . -migrate
```
## Phase 2: Namespace Manager
### Step 2.1: Create Namespace Manager
```go
// internal/namespace/manager.go
package namespace
import (
"fmt"
"os/exec"
"github.com/google/uuid"
"git.datadunia.com/nexusguard/nexus-server-core/internal/models"
"gorm.io/gorm"
)
type Manager struct {
db *gorm.DB
}
func NewManager(db *gorm.DB) *Manager {
return &Manager{db: db}
}
func (m *Manager) Create(name string, ownerID uuid.UUID) (*models.Namespace, error) {
// Create namespace in database
ns := &models.Namespace{
Name: name,
OwnerID: ownerID,
}
if err := m.db.Create(ns).Error; err != nil {
return nil, err
}
// Create Linux network namespace
cmd := exec.Command("ip", "netns", "add", "ns_"+name)
if err := cmd.Run(); err != nil {
return nil, fmt.Errorf("failed to create network namespace: %w", err)
}
// Add owner as admin user
nsUser := &models.NamespaceUser{
NamespaceID: ns.ID,
UserID: ownerID,
Role: "admin",
}
if err := m.db.Create(nsUser).Error; err != nil {
return nil, err
}
return ns, nil
}
func (m *Manager) Delete(name string) error {
// Delete from database
if err := m.db.Where("name = ?", name).Delete(&models.Namespace{}).Error; err != nil {
return err
}
// Delete Linux network namespace
cmd := exec.Command("ip", "netns", "del", "ns_"+name)
if err := cmd.Run(); err != nil {
return fmt.Errorf("failed to delete network namespace: %w", err)
}
return nil
}
func (m *Manager) Get(name string) (*models.Namespace, error) {
var ns models.Namespace
if err := m.db.Where("name = ?", name).First(&ns).Error; err != nil {
return nil, err
}
return &ns, nil
}
func (m *Manager) List() ([]models.Namespace, error) {
var namespaces []models.Namespace
if err := m.db.Find(&namespaces).Error; err != nil {
return nil, err
}
return namespaces, nil
}
func (m *Manager) AddUser(namespaceID, userID uuid.UUID, role string) error {
nsUser := &models.NamespaceUser{
NamespaceID: namespaceID,
UserID: userID,
Role: role,
}
return m.db.Create(nsUser).Error
}
func (m *Manager) RemoveUser(namespaceID, userID uuid.UUID) error {
return m.db.Where("namespace_id = ? AND user_id = ?", namespaceID, userID).
Delete(&models.NamespaceUser{}).Error
}
func (m *Manager) UpdateUserRole(namespaceID, userID uuid.UUID, role string) error {
return m.db.Model(&models.NamespaceUser{}).
Where("namespace_id = ? AND user_id = ?", namespaceID, userID).
Update("role", role).Error
}
```
### Step 2.2: Create Namespace API Handler
```go
// api/namespaces.go
package api
import (
"net/http"
"github.com/gin-gonic/gin"
"github.com/google/uuid"
"git.datadunia.com/nexusguard/nexus-server-core/internal/namespace"
)
type NamespacesHandler struct {
mgr *namespace.Manager
}
func NewNamespacesHandler(mgr *namespace.Manager) *NamespacesHandler {
return &NamespacesHandler{mgr: mgr}
}
type CreateNamespaceRequest struct {
Name string `json:"name" binding:"required"`
}
func (h *NamespacesHandler) Create(c *gin.Context) {
var req CreateNamespaceRequest
if err := c.ShouldBindJSON(&req); err != nil {
c.JSON(http.StatusBadRequest, gin.H{"error": err.Error()})
return
}
ownerID, _ := c.Get("userID")
ns, err := h.mgr.Create(req.Name, ownerID.(uuid.UUID))
if err != nil {
c.JSON(http.StatusInternalServerError, gin.H{"error": err.Error()})
return
}
c.JSON(http.StatusCreated, ns)
}
func (h *NamespacesHandler) List(c *gin.Context) {
namespaces, err := h.mgr.List()
if err != nil {
c.JSON(http.StatusInternalServerError, gin.H{"error": err.Error()})
return
}
c.JSON(http.StatusOK, namespaces)
}
func (h *NamespacesHandler) Get(c *gin.Context) {
name := c.Param("name")
ns, err := h.mgr.Get(name)
if err != nil {
c.JSON(http.StatusNotFound, gin.H{"error": "namespace not found"})
return
}
c.JSON(http.StatusOK, ns)
}
func (h *NamespacesHandler) Delete(c *gin.Context) {
name := c.Param("name")
if err := h.mgr.Delete(name); err != nil {
c.JSON(http.StatusInternalServerError, gin.H{"error": err.Error()})
return
}
c.JSON(http.StatusOK, gin.H{"status": "deleted"})
}
type AddUserRequest struct {
UserID string `json:"user_id" binding:"required"`
Role string `json:"role" binding:"required"`
}
func (h *NamespacesHandler) AddUser(c *gin.Context) {
name := c.Param("name")
var req AddUserRequest
if err := c.ShouldBindJSON(&req); err != nil {
c.JSON(http.StatusBadRequest, gin.H{"error": err.Error()})
return
}
ns, err := h.mgr.Get(name)
if err != nil {
c.JSON(http.StatusNotFound, gin.H{"error": "namespace not found"})
return
}
userID, err := uuid.Parse(req.UserID)
if err != nil {
c.JSON(http.StatusBadRequest, gin.H{"error": "invalid user_id"})
return
}
if err := h.mgr.AddUser(ns.ID, userID, req.Role); err != nil {
c.JSON(http.StatusInternalServerError, gin.H{"error": err.Error()})
return
}
c.JSON(http.StatusOK, gin.H{"status": "added"})
}
func (h *NamespacesHandler) RemoveUser(c *gin.Context) {
name := c.Param("name")
userIDStr := c.Param("user_id")
ns, err := h.mgr.Get(name)
if err != nil {
c.JSON(http.StatusNotFound, gin.H{"error": "namespace not found"})
return

```
### Step 2.3: Register API Routes
```go
// main.go
func main() {
// ... existing code ...
// Create namespace manager
nsMgr := namespace.NewManager(db)
nsHandler := api.NewNamespacesHandler(nsMgr)
// Register namespace API routes
v1 := router.Group("/api/v1")

"gorm.io/gorm"
)
type Manager struct {
db *gorm.DB

func NewManager(db *gorm.DB) *Manager {
return &Manager{db: db}
}
func (m *Manager) Create(namespaceID uuid.UUID, name string) (*models.VRF, error) {
// Get next available table ID
var maxTableID int
m.db.Model(&models.VRF{}).
Where("namespace_id = ?", namespaceID).
Select("COALESCE(MAX(table_id), 99)").
Scan(&maxTableID)

// Create VRF in database
vrf := &models.VRF{
NamespaceID: namespaceID,
Name: name,
TableID: tableID,
}
if err := m.db.Create(vrf).Error; err != nil {
return nil, err
}
// Get namespace name for Linux command
var ns models.Namespace
if err := m.db.First(&ns, namespaceID).Error; err != nil {

// Delete from database
return m.db.Where("namespace_id = ? AND name = ?", namespaceID, name).
Delete(&models.VRF{}).Error
}
func (m *Manager) Get(namespaceID uuid.UUID, name string) (*models.VRF, error) {
var vrf models.VRF

```bash
# Current architecture
iperf3 -s -B 10.172.21.1 &
iperf3 -c 10.172.21.2 -t 10
# Namespace + VRF
### Benchmark 3: Memory Usage
```bash
# Monitor memory per namespace
for ns in $(ip netns list | awk '{print $1}'); do
echo "=== $ns ==="
ip netns exec "$ns" cat /proc/net/dev
ip netns exec "$ns" free -m
done
```
**Results:**
```
Current: 10MB total
Namespace+VRF: 11MB total
Overhead: +10%
```
## Optimization Strategies
### 1. Namespace Pooling
**Concept:** Pre-create namespaces for common use cases
```bash
# Create namespace pool
for i in {1..100}; do
ip netns add ns_pool_$i
done
# Assign namespaces to users
ip link set veth0 netns ns_pool_1
```
**Benefit:** Reduces namespace creation time from ~10ms to ~0ms
### 2. VRF Reuse
**Concept:** Share VRFs across namespaces when possible
```bash
# Create shared VRF
ip link add vrf:shared type vrf table 100
# Bind to multiple namespaces
ip netns exec ns_1 ip link set vrf:shared netns ns_1
ip netns exec ns_2 ip link set vrf:shared netns ns_2
```
**Benefit:** Reduces VRF creation overhead
### 3. Routing Table Caching
**Concept:** Cache routing tables in userspace
```go
// Cache routing table
type RoutingCache struct {
tables map[int][]Route
mu sync.RWMutex
}
func (c *RoutingCache) GetRoutes(tableID int) []Route {
c.mu.RLock()
defer c.mu.RUnlock()
return c.tables[tableID]
}
```
**Benefit:** Reduces kernel calls for routing lookups
### 4. nftables Rule Optimization
**Concept:** Use sets and maps for efficient rule matching
```bash
# Create set for allowed IPs
ip netns exec ns_test nft add set ip nexusguard allowed_ips '{ type ipv4_addr; }'
# Add IPs to set
ip netns exec ns_test nft add element ip nexusguard allowed_ips '{ 10.100.0.2, 10.100.0.3 }'
# Use set in rules
ip netns exec ns_test nft add rule ip nexusguard forward ip saddr @allowed_ips accept
```
**Benefit:** Reduces rule evaluation time from O(n) to O(1)
### 5. WireGuard Batching
**Concept:** Batch WireGuard configuration updates
```go
// Batch peer updates
type WGBatch struct {
peers []PeerConfig
mu sync.Mutex
}
func (b *WGBatch) AddPeer(peer PeerConfig) {
b.mu.Lock()
defer b.mu.Unlock()
b.peers = append(b.peers, peer)
}
func (b *WGBatch) Apply(iface string) error {
b.mu.Lock()
defer b.mu.Unlock()
// Apply all peers at once
for _, peer := range b.peers {
// Configure peer
}
b.peers = nil
return nil
}
```
**Benefit:** Reduces kernel calls for peer configuration
## Performance Monitoring
### System Metrics
```bash
# Monitor CPU usage
top -p $(pgrep -d, nexusguard-server)
# Monitor memory usage
free -m
# Monitor network usage
iftop -i eth0
# Monitor disk usage
iostat -x 1
```
### Namespace Metrics
```bash
# Monitor namespace CPU usage
for ns in $(ip netns list | awk '{print $1}'); do
echo "=== $ns ==="
ip netns exec "$ns" top -bn1 | head -5

# Namespace + VRF Security Considerations
## Overview
This document covers security aspects of the Namespace + VRF architecture, including isolation guarantees, attack surfaces, and best practices.
## Isolation Guarantees
### Network Namespace Isolation
**What's isolated:**
- Network interfaces
- Routing tables
- iptables/nftables rules
- Socket bindings
- `/proc/net` entries
- Firewall rules
**What's NOT isolated:**
- Kernel (shared)
- Process IDs (different namespace, but visible with `nsenter`)
- Filesystem (shared unless `--mount` used)
- Users (shared unless `--user` used)
**Guarantee Level:** HIGH
```
┌─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐
│ Namespace Isolation │
│ │
│ ✅ Network interfaces (complete isolation) │
│ ✅ Routing tables (complete isolation) │
│ ✅ nftables rules (complete isolation) │
│ ✅ Socket bindings (complete isolation) │
│ ⚠️ Kernel (shared) │
│ ⚠️ Filesystem (shared) │
│ ⚠️ Process IDs (visible with nsenter) │
└─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
```
### VRF Isolation
**What's isolated:**
- Routing tables
- Gateway routes
- Policy routing
**What's NOT isolated:**
- Network interfaces (shared within namespace)
- Kernel (shared)
- nftables rules (shared within namespace)
**Guarantee Level:** MEDIUM
```
┌─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐
│ VRF Isolation │
│ │
│ ✅ Routing tables (complete isolation) │
│ ✅ Gateway routes (complete isolation) │
│ ⚠️ Network interfaces (shared within namespace) │
│ ⚠️ Kernel (shared) │
│ ⚠️ nftables rules (shared within namespace) │
└─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
```
## Attack Surfaces
### 1. Cross-Namespace Attacks
**Risk:** LOW
**Attack Vector:**
- Attacker gains access to one namespace
- Attempts to access other namespaces
**Mitigation:**
- Network namespace isolation prevents direct access
- No routing between namespaces without explicit veth pairs
- nftables rules can block cross-namespace traffic
**Detection:**
```bash
# Monitor cross-namespace attempts
ip netns exec ns_test tcpdump -i any -n | grep -v "ns_test"
```
### 2. VRF Escape Attacks
**Risk:** LOW
**Attack Vector:**
- Attacker in one VRF attempts to access another VRF
- Uses routing table manipulation
**Mitigation:**
- VRF isolation prevents routing table access
- Each VRF has separate routing table
- No shared routing state
**Detection:**
```bash
# Monitor VRF routing changes
ip netns exec ns_test ip route show table 100
ip netns exec ns_test ip route show table 200
```
### 3. Kernel Exploits
**Risk:** MEDIUM
**Attack Vector:**
- Kernel vulnerability allows namespace escape
- Shared kernel between all namespaces
**Mitigation:**
- Keep kernel updated
- Use kernel security modules (SELinux, AppArmor)
- Limit namespace capabilities
**Detection:**
```bash
# Monitor kernel messages
dmesg | grep -i "namespace\|vrf\|escape"
```
### 4. Resource Exhaustion
**Risk:** MEDIUM
**Attack Vector:**
- Attacker creates excessive namespaces/VRFs
- Exhausts kernel resources
**Mitigation:**
- Limit number of namespaces per user
- Monitor resource usage
- Implement quotas
**Detection:**
```bash
# Monitor namespace count
ip netns list | wc -l
# Monitor VRF count
ip link show type vrf | wc -l
```
### 5. API Access Control Bypass
**Risk:** LOW
**Attack Vector:**
- Attacker bypasses namespace-scoped API
- Accesses other namespaces via API
**Mitigation:**
- Middleware validates namespace access
- Role-based access control
- JWT tokens with namespace claims
**Detection:**
```bash
# Monitor API access
journalctl -u nexusguard-server | grep "namespace"
```
## Security Best Practices
### 1. Namespace Creation
```bash
# DO: Create namespace with limited capabilities
ip netns add ns_test
# DO: Set resource limits
ulimit -n 65535
# DON'T: Use --privileged flag in containers
docker run --privileged ... # BAD
# DO: Use specific capabilities
docker run --cap-add=NET_ADMIN --cap-add=SYS_ADMIN ... # GOOD
```
### 2. VRF Configuration
```bash
# DO: Use separate routing tables
ip link add vrf:main type vrf table 100
ip link add vrf:isolated type vrf table 200
# DO: Add routes to correct table
ip route add 10.100.0.0/24 dev wg0 table 100
# DON'T: Share routing tables between VRFs
# BAD: Using same table ID for different VRFs
```
### 3. nftables Rules
```bash
# DO: Create per-namespace tables
ip netns exec ns_test nft add table ip nexusguard
# DO: Set default DROP policy
ip netns exec ns_test nft add chain ip nexusguard forward '{type filter hook forward priority filter; policy drop;}'
# DO: Allow only necessary traffic
ip netns exec ns_test nft add rule ip nexusguard forward iifname wg0 accept
# DON'T: Use default ACCEPT policy
# BAD: policy accept;
```
### 4. WireGuard Configuration
```bash
# DO: Use strong keys
wg genkey | wg pubkey
# DO: Use preshared keys
wg genpsk
# DO: Limit allowed IPs
wg set wg0 peer <pubkey> allowed-ips 10.100.0.2/32
# DON'T: Use 0.0.0.0/0 for allowed IPs
# BAD: allowed-ips 0.0.0.0/0
```
### 5. API Authentication
```go
// DO: Validate namespace access
func (h *Handler) ValidateNamespaceAccess(userID, namespaceID uuid.UUID) error {
var nsUser models.NamespaceUser
if err := h.db.Where("user_id = ? AND namespace_id = ?", userID, namespaceID).
First(&nsUser).Error; err != nil {
return fmt.Errorf("access denied")
}
return nil
}
// DO: Check role permissions
func (h *Handler) CheckPermission(namespaceID, userID uuid.UUID, requiredRole string) error {
var nsUser models.NamespaceUser
if err := h.db.Where("user_id = ? AND namespace_id = ?", userID, namespaceID).
First(&nsUser).Error; err != nil {
return fmt.Errorf("access denied")
}
if !hasPermission(nsUser.Role, requiredRole) {
return fmt.Errorf("insufficient permissions")
}
return nil
}
```
## Compliance Considerations

ip netns exec ns_pci nft add chain ip pci forward '{type filter hook forward priority filter; policy drop;}'
ip netns exec ns_pci nft add rule ip pci forward iifname wg-pci accept
# Enable logging
ip netns exec ns_pci nft add rule ip pci forward log prefix "PCI: " accept
```
ip netns exec ns_hipaa nft add rule ip hipaa forward iifname wg-hipaa accept
# Enable audit logging
ip netns exec ns_hipaa nft add rule ip hipaa forward log prefix "HIPAA: " accept
```

## Conclusion
The Namespace + VRF architecture provides **strong isolation guarantees** for network workloads. Key security considerations:
1. **Namespace isolation** is HIGH — complete network stack isolation
2. **VRF isolation** is MEDIUM — routing table isolation within namespace
3. **Attack surfaces** are limited but exist (kernel, filesystem)
4. **Compliance** is achievable with proper implementation
5. **Monitoring** is essential for security assurance
**Recommendation:** Implement with security best practices and regular auditing.

```bash
# Solution 1: Verify chain hook
ip netns exec ns_test nft list chain ip nexusguard forward
# Solution 2: Add rules correctly
ip netns exec ns_test nft add rule ip nexusguard forward iifname wg0 accept
# Solution 3: Check interface names
ip netns exec ns_test ip link show
# Solution 4: Flush and re-add rules
ip netns exec ns_test nft flush chain ip nexusguard forward
```
### Issue 6: Cross-Namespace Communication Fails
**Symptoms:**
```bash
# From ns_alice
$ ip netns exec ns_alice ping 10.100.0.1
connect: Network is unreachable
# But 10.100.0.1 is in ns_zerocode
```
**Causes:**
- No routing between namespaces
- VRF isolation working correctly
- Need veth pair for cross-namespace
**Solutions:**
```bash
# Solution 1: Create veth pair (if needed)
ip link add veth-alice type veth peer name veth-zerocode
ip link set veth-zerocode netns ns_zerocode
ip link set veth-alice netns ns_alice
# Solution 2: Configure veth
ip netns exec ns_alice ip addr add 10.0.0.1/24 dev veth-alice
ip netns exec ns_alice ip link set veth-alice up
ip netns exec ns_alice ip route add default via 10.0.0.1
ip netns exec ns_zerocode ip addr add 10.0.0.2/24 dev veth-zerocode
ip netns exec ns_zerocode ip link set veth-zerocode up
ip netns exec ns_zerocode ip route add default via 10.0.0.2
# Solution 3: Add static routes
ip netns exec ns_alice ip route add 10.100.0.0/24 via 10.0.0.2
ip netns exec ns_zerocode ip route add 10.100.0.0/24 via 10.0.0.1
```
### Issue 7: WireGuard Handshake Fails
**Symptoms:**
```bash
$ ip netns exec ns_test wg show
interface: wg0
peer: <public_key>
endpoint: 1.2.3.4:51820
allowed ips: 10.100.0.2/32
latest handshake: (none)
transfer: 0 B received, 0 B sent
```
**Causes:**
- Firewall blocking UDP
- NAT not configured
- Endpoint unreachable
**Solutions:**
```bash
# Solution 1: Check firewall
ip netns exec ns_test nft list ruleset
# Solution 2: Allow UDP in firewall
ip netns exec ns_test nft add rule ip nexusguard input udp dport 51820 accept
# Solution 3: Configure NAT (if needed)
ip netns exec ns_test nft add table ip nat
ip netns exec ns_test nft add chain ip nat postrouting '{type nat hook postrouting priority 100;}'
ip netns exec ns_test nft add rule ip nat postrouting oifname eth0 masquerade
# Solution 4: Check connectivity
ip netns exec ns_test ping 1.2.3.4
```
### Issue 8: Permission Denied for API Calls
**Symptoms:**
```json
{
"error": "permission denied"
}
```
**Causes:**
- User not in namespace
- Wrong role
- Token expired
**Solutions:**
```bash
# Solution 1: Check user in namespace
psql -U nexusguard -d nexusguard -c "
SELECT * FROM namespace_users
WHERE namespace_id = (SELECT id FROM namespaces WHERE name = 'testns');
"
# Solution 2: Add user to namespace
curl -X POST http://localhost:8080/api/v1/ns/testns/users \
-H "Authorization: Bearer <admin_token>" \
-H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-d '{"user_id": "<user_id>", "role": "admin"}'
# Solution 3: Check role
psql -U nexusguard -d nexusguard -c "
SELECT nu.role FROM namespace_users nu
JOIN namespaces n ON nu.namespace_id = n.id
WHERE n.name = 'testns' AND nu.user_id = '<user_id>';
"
```
## Debugging Commands
